GIFFORD, Fla. – Thursday, April 29, 2021 – John’s Island Community Service League has awarded the Gifford Youth Achievement Center (GYAC) with a $30,000 grant in loyal support of the Center’s afterschool program, which has been providing educational reinforcement to students in Kindergarten through 12th grades for more than 20 years.
GYAC’s degreed teachers provide year-round academic support, homework assistance and guidance. The JI Service League’s continued support of GYAC’s afterschool program plays a pivotal role in ensuring students have access to the resources they need to achieve both in and out of school.
“Helping children reach their potential is what GYAC is all about. Since the year 2000, the JI Service League has gladly helped support GYAC’s After School Program, providing quality instruction for vulnerable and disenfranchised kids grade K – 12. On average, 250 students are served through tutoring, mentoring and academic enrichment – with a strong emphasis on education,” remarked Lynne Whipple of the JI Service League’s grants committee.
“What really caught my eye recently was their homework completion rate of 95% and honor roll achievement of 54% pre-covid — impressive outcomes for kids who might otherwise be struggling. The JI Service League is proud to provide operating funds to GYAC. This organization has a proven track record and their success with their children is undeniable.”
A structured learning environment remains a core focus, something many students desperately need. GYAC’s newly constructed educational center houses eight state-of-the-art classrooms, a student lounge and computer lab. Beginning June 1, GYAC will transition into their 10-week summer camp.

Gifford Youth Achievement Center, a 501(c)(3), opened its doors in 1998 with the sole purpose of enhancing the academic performance of children in Indian River County. The nonprofit organization, governed by a volunteer board of directors, focuses on resource-limited students in Indian River County. In addition to year-round educational programs and activities for youth, GYAC provides activities for adults and seniors citizens, such as exercise classes, bible study and educational training. The Center also hosts job fairs, health clinics, community gatherings and serves as an information hub for those in need of services.
