INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 36-year-old Iowa man faces a DUI manslaughter charge after authorities said his pickup slammed into a home in February, leaving a sleeping couple with critical injuries.
A 62-year-old woman who was severely hurt in the crash later died the same day, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Highway troopers are no longer releasing the names of crash victims because of privacy reasons.
Prosecutors added the additional charge against Shane Russell Wilson this week. Wilson was originally charged with fleeing the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injuries, two counts of driving under the influence with serious bodily injury, two counts of driving under the influence with property damage, and driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content level of 0.08 or more.
Prosecutors on Wednesday dropped the charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injuries, two counts of driving under the influence with serious bodily injuries, and driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content level of 0.08 or more, court records show. Prosecutors could not be immediately reached for comment on the dropped charges.
Wilson remained held Wednesday at the Indian River County Jail. His bond information was not available.
The overnight Feb. 27 incident, involving two crashes, happened in the 200 block of 27th Avenue Southwest, authorities said. The wrecks injured four people total.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Wilson was driving a black four-door Ford F-250 pickup – carrying a trailer – on southbound 27th Avenue Southwest. Troopers said the Ford veered into the northbound lanes and sideswiped a silver Kia Optima, leaving a man and woman in the car with minor injuries.
Wilson then swerved the pickup to the right and crashed into a nearby home. Troopers said a 45-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman were in bed when the truck smashed through their bedroom and ran them over.
The couple was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce with critical injuries, troopers said. The man was later released from the hospital.
Wilson ran from the home to a canal line, but was detained soon after by K-9 deputies. Wilson has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. April 23, court records show.
