SEBASTIAN — A 27-year-old Vero Beach man was being treated for a fractured femur following a three-vehicle wreck that left him trapped inside his car Friday, fire rescue crews said.
Firefighters used the “jaws of life” rescue tools to free the man through the car’s front- passenger side door, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Jamie Coleman said.
The collision happened about 9 a.m. in the 12000 block of Roseland Road, Sebastian, Coleman said. The crash site was just west of the Sebastian Municipal Airport.
The wreck involved a 2011 silver Hyundai, a 2006 red Nissan and a 2003 red Dodge Ram pickup truck, Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Yanko Reyes said. Reyes said the Hyundai was traveling north approaching Sunset Drive when it rear-ended the Dodge truck.
The Hyundai then spun out onto the grass.
The impact caused the truck to swerve into the opposite lane and strike the southbound Nissan, Reyes said. The Hyundai driver was flown to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne with a fractured femur.
The man had traumatic, but non-life threatening injuries, Coleman said. The Dodge driver, a 43-year-old Vero Beach man, was taken to Sebastian River Medical Center with minor injuries, Coleman and Reyes said.
The Nissan driver, a 66-year-old Micco man, refused treatment, officials said. There were no passengers in the vehicles, Coleman said.
Highway troopers continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
No further details were immediately available.
