VERO BEACH — Police continue to search for a driver who they said struck a man walking on U.S. 1 last week, returned to the scene and did not call 911.
“I’m confident we will locate the vehicle,” Vero Beach police spokesman Master Officer Darrell Rivers said.
Officers said the motorist drove back to the crash site, got out of the car and stood over the injured man, 52, of Vero Beach. The unidentified driver then got back in a dark-colored vehicle and left.
The man, who was seriously hurt, remains hospitalized at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, Rivers said. Rivers said the man has a “long road to recovery.”
His name was not released. Police on Tuesday released surveillance photos of the vehicle involved in the wreck.

The crash happened about 7 p.m. March 7 in the 1100 block of 21st Street in Vero Beach, near Pizza Mia restaurant. Rivers said the man was walking northbound on U.S. 1 when the eastbound vehicle struck him.
Rivers said the vehicle’s front-right end should have damage from the crash.
Rivers said the hit-and-run driver will face a charge of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injuries. Anyone with information on the vehicle or its driver should contact police Officer John Scroggin at 772-978-4980 or jscroggin@vbpd.org.
