INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Motorists might see smoke Wednesday from a 9,000-acre prescribed burn, which will be conducted by aerial ignition, according to St. John’s River Water Management District officials.

The controlled burn will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Blue Cypress Conservation Area, north of State Road 60. The burns help to prevent uncontrollable wildfires by reducing vegetation and shrub build up, and improving habitat for wildlife.

District officials will scorch shrubs east of Blue Cypress Lake and west of Lake Garcia, authorities said. Drivers on S.R. 60 or C.R. 512 might see columns of smoke from the prescribed burn.

All prescribed burns, weather permitting, must first be authorized by Florida Forest Service. Those who have further questions on Wednesday’s planned burn should contact the district land management office in Palatka, Putnam County, at 1-386-329-4404.
