‘Give it up,’ – Teen sticks gun through door in robbery attempt

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An 18-year-old who deputies said stuck his gun through the door of a motel room while trying to rob two guests, was jailed last weekend.

Dennis Jakyus Bishop told the guests, “Give it up. Don’t make any noise and don’t scream,” reports show. Deputies said Bishop pointed a loaded, stolen 9mm firearm at the pair.

Bishop, described as homeless, said he tried to rob the guests because he had not eaten in three days and was hungry, reports show.

Deputies arrested Bishop on a charge of armed robbery with a deadly weapon. Bishop was released Wednesday from the Indian River County Jail on $10,000 bond.

Indian River County deputies responded to reports of an armed robbery about 1 p.m. Dec. 12 at Motel 6 in the 8800 block of 20th Street. The motel is just east of Interstate 95.

The guests, a man and woman, told deputies they were unloading items from their vehicle when they noticed a man walking nearby. The man, later identified as Bishop, was wearing a camouflage hooded jacket and black pants, reports show.

The guests went inside their room and set down a purse and several other items, deputies said. When the man in the room went to the front door, Bishop stumbled to the doorway, stuck his arm in the threshold and pointed the silver gun at the pair, reports show.

The man slammed the door closed on Bishop, deputies said. Bishop ran away from the area while the man called the receptionist, who then called 911.

Deputies found Bishop – still carrying the firearm – at a truck stop nearby.

Deputies arrested Bishop and took him to the county jail. Bishop has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Jan. 29, 2021, court records show.
