Woman struck, killed by train; FEC investigating

VERO BEACH — An unidentified, middle-aged woman was killed after being struck by a train early Thursday, first responders said.

Indian River County Fire Rescue and Vero Beach police responded to the incident about 5:30 a.m. at the railroad tracks near 21st Street and U.S. 1. The train was traveling southbound at the time of the deadly wreck, police spokesman Master Officer Darrell Rivers said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said. It was unclear how fast the train was moving.

Law enforcement closed all intersections from Aviation Boulevard to 16th Street. Florida East Coast Railway officials removed the train from the area, Rivers said.

All roadways were reopened by 9:15 a.m., Rivers said. FEC police will investigate the cause of the crash.

No further details were immediately available.
