Photos – Voters hit the polls on Election Day

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Local voter turnout for this year’s presidential election has already surpassed the county numbers compared to 2016.

The voter turnout for Indian River County was at 78 percent about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. This is a slight increase from nearly 77 percent total voter turnout for the 2016 Presidential Election.

But, the night is still young, and many more votes still need to be counted in Indian River County.

There were more than 97,000 ballots cast about 6:30 p.m., according to the Indian River County Supervisor of Elections website. The site showed 45,603 residents voted by mail, 36,469 participated in early voting, 15,576 hit the polls on election day and 93 filled out provisional ballots.

A provisional ballot is used to record a vote when there are questions about a voter’s eligibility that must be resolved before the vote can count. There are 124,598 active eligible voters in Indian River County.
