A high school and an elementary school both reported COVID-19 cases on campus Friday, leading officials to place several students and a staff member on quarantine.
There are now 26 incidents involving virus cases reported at traditional schools in Indian River County. There have been 27 incidents reported overall at local campuses.
To date, 448 students and 16 staff members have been placed on two-week quarantines since the start of the school year.
In the latest two cases, Florida Department of Health conducted contact tracing at Vero Beach High School and Dodgertown Elementary School. Those who tested positive for COVID-19 include a student at the high school and a staff member at the elementary school, the School District of Indian River County said.
The health department identified four students who had close contact with the pupil with a positive test at Vero Beach High School, officials said. Health officials also identified seven students who had close contact with the staff member at Dodgertown Elementary.
School officials called the families of the students and told them the youth would need to stay home and monitor their symptoms. The student and staff member with positive tests were also instructed to self-quarantine, officials said.
All school families and staff members at the two campuses were also notified of the incidents. The students will continue school through virtual learning, officials said.
Custodial services continue to disinfect and sanitize all areas of the campuses to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
