Vero Beach High School reported its sixth COVID-19 case on campus, leading officials to place 33 students on quarantine Wednesday, authorities said.
There are now 24 incidents involving virus cases reported at traditional schools in Indian River County. There have been 25 incidents reported overall at local campuses.
To date, 436 students and 15 staff members have been placed on two-week quarantines since the start of the school year.
In the latest case, Florida Department of Health conducted contact tracing at Vero Beach High School after a student tested positive, according to the School District of Indian River County. Health officials identified 32 other students who had close contact with the pupil.
School officials called the families of the students and told them the youth would need to stay home and monitor their symptoms, officials said. The student with the positive test was also instructed to self-quarantine.
The students will continue school through virtual learning, officials said.
All Vero Beach High School students and families were notified of the incident. Custodial services continue to disinfect and sanitize all areas of the campus.
In late September, traditional schools had 9,406 students attending class in person, 2,114 enrolled in transitional learning and 3,420 enrolled in virtual learning, officials said.
