VERO BEACH — Police continue to search for a vehicle in connection with a drive-by shooting where gunfire struck a vacant apartment Monday.
No injuries were reported, Vero Beach police spokesman Master Officer Darrell Rivers said. Rivers said the apartment had been vacant for several weeks.
Police said a group of unknown people were traveling in a 2005-2010 red or burgundy Jeep Grand Cherokee about 5 p.m. Monday in the Lake Rose area. The sports utility vehicle traveled southbound in the 1800 block of 40th Avenue, south of State Road 60 and near Thompson Field sports complex.
Officers said one of the people inside pulled out a 9 mm handgun and fired seven rounds toward the east side wall of the apartment. Police said the vehicle was last seen leaving southbound on 40th Avenue.
Police canvassed the area for evidence and saw four impacts on the wall from gunfire, Rivers said. Rivers said the bullets did not go through the wall.
Officers spoke with several witnesses who heard the gunshots, Rivers said. Police obtained surveillance footage showing the vehicle seen in the area during the shooting.
Anyone with information on the vehicle or incident should contact police Sgt. Det. Brian Hesse at 772-978-4600 or Det. Eddy Somoza at 772-978-4661 or esomoza@vbpd.org.
