VERO BEACH — Ron Perranoski, a former Hall of Fame player for the L.A. Dodgers who helped lead the team to win two World Series championships in the 1960s, died Friday, according to Strunk Funeral Home.
He was 84 years old, funeral home officials said. Funeral home officials said Perranoski died in Vero Beach, where he was a longtime resident.
“It’s a sad day when a member of the Dodger family passes away,” said Nancy Gollnick, human resources employee with Jackie Robinson Training Complex. “Once a Dodger, always a Dodger.”
It was not immediately clear if Perranoski died at his home. Details on the cause of Perranoski’s death were not available.
Tributes poured in this week on social media to remember Perranoski. In an Oct. 4 Facebook post, the L.A. Dodgers said Perranoski was “one of the Dodgers’ greatest left-hand relievers of all time.”
“We offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends,” the Dodgers said in the Facebook post.
Perranoski was born April 1, 1936, in Paterson, New Jersey. The baseball great played as a pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1961 to 1973.
Perranoski played for several teams throughout his career, including the L.A. Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers and California Angels. Perranoski also coached the L.A. Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.
The Dodgers met in Vero Beach from 1948 to 2008 for spring training at what is now designated as the Jackie Robinson Training Complex, officials said. In 1983, Perranoski was inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame.
