Learn Spanish virtually with Literacy Services of Indian River County

Literacy Services of Indian River County is offering its first Virtual Spanish Class this fall. In 2019, the organization held a successful class in person. With current health safety concerns and many people at home, they are excited to offer this virtual as a fundraiser for its programs. It will be a 10-week class starting Oct. 7 through Dec. 9.

The virtual class kicks off in the middle of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates and recognizes the contributions Hispanic Americans have made to American society and culture.

Eighty percent of Literacy Services’ students are working hard to learn English and of those, 80 percent are Hispanic. This will be an opportunity for tutors and community participants to turn the tables and celebrate by learning Spanish.

The instructor is a Literacy Services’ Tutor, Lorraine Ledford, who has years of experience teaching Spanish. Lorraine taught Spanish at the Harvard Divinity School for 20 years and has traveled extensively in Latin America. Students of Literacy Services will also be invited to help the class practice their new skills.

Classes will be held on Wednesdays from Noon to 1 p.m. through Zoom and size will be limited to maximize learning. Interested participants can register online at www.literacyservicesirc.org or call our office and leave a message at (772) 778-2223. The cost is $200 per household and includes one book per registration.

Proceeds benefit the organization’s mission to deliver innovative and comprehensive learning opportunities for adults seeking English language and literacy skills. Their vision is that all adults have the literacy skills to thrive in our community. Literacy Services works with over 300 students annually through volunteer tutors. Volunteers do not need prior teaching experience and receive training and resources from Literacy Services.
