Man dies after possible drowning Friday

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An 83-year-old man found unconscious in a backyard pool Friday, has died, authorities said.

The man – identified as Robert Steven Taylor – was taken by ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital in critical condition, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke previously said. Taylor was later pronounced dead at the hospital, a sheriff’s report shows.

An autopsy was expected to be performed. Sheriff’s detectives determined there was no foul play involved in the incident.

Indian River County deputies and fire rescue crews responded to reports of a possible drowning at 3:17 p.m. Friday at a residence in the 4200 block of 60th Court. Taylor’s wife and daughter-in-law said they were on the side of the pool earlier talking to Taylor in the water, and that he seemed normal, reports show.

The women went inside to change into swimsuits. When the women came back out five minutes later, they saw Taylor floating upside down in the pool, reports show.

The daughter-in-law pulled Taylor to the side of the pool, but was unable to get him out because of his size, reports show. The daughter-in-law performed CPR on Taylor until fire rescue crews arrived.

Fire crews continued to try and revive the man, and then took him to the hospital where he died. The incident remains under investigation.
