Possible murder suicide at senior living complex still under investigation

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Detectives are still investigating a possible murder suicide that happened at an independent Vero senior living complex last week.

The genders, ages and identities of the two individuals were not released. Autopsies were expected to be conducted in the case as detectives search for a possible motive.

Indian River County sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers was not immediately available to comment.

Deputies conducted a welfare check at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 13 at an apartment unit at Lexington Club at Vero senior living in the 6800 block of 20th Street, a sheriff’s case report showed. A caller told deputies that they had not heard from the residents since Aug. 8, and that one of them was sick with cancer, reports show.

Deputies went to the apartment, but no one answered the door. When an employee opened the door, deputies went inside and found the residents dead with gunshot wounds, reports show.

The sheriff’s crime scene unit went to the complex to investigate. The medical examiner’s office removed the bodies from the building, reports show.

It was unclear if a firearm was found in the apartment.

No further details were immediately available. The incident remains under investigation.
