Jeffry Haigh Tindall, 77, Vero Beach

Jeffry Haigh Tindall, 77, of Vero Beach, Florida and North Kingstown, Rhode Island died at home on June 30, 2020, surrounded by his family. The cause was kidney failure, a complication of heart disease. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, an animal lover, and a loyal and generous friend, Jeff enriched the lives of many.

Born on August 16, 1942 in Philadelphia to Ruth Haigh Tindall and William Hall Tindall, Jeff grew up in Germantown and Oreland, PA and attended Penn Charter school. He received his B.S. degree in biology from Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia, followed by a master’s degree in physical education and a doctorate in counseling psychology from American University in Washington D.C.

He began his working life in 1965 as a biology teacher and track coach at Langley High School in Langley, Virginia.  At Langley, he had tremendous success both in the classroom and as a coach, taking the school’s cross country and track and field teams to several state championships. After teaching for three years, he returned to graduate school and eventually served on the faculties of both Rutgers and Fordham Universities. The majority of his working life was spent alongside his wife Dr. Joy Lutz Tindall in private practice as a psychologist in Flemington, New Jersey. They made their home and raised their children in nearby Stanton.

Motivated by a deep commitment to public service and stewardship of the environment, Jeff served on the Readington Township Committee for over two decades and as mayor of the town for two terms. The results of his hard work are visible today in Readington’s Farmland Preservation Program, acquisition and expansion of its active recreational facilities, affordable housing, Whitehouse Station walkability and traffic improvements, and increased protections for the south branch of the Raritan River. A gubernatorial appointment to the New Jersey Board of Psychological Examiners as well as a stint on the board of the Hunterdon County Medical Center further exemplified his dedication to community.

A lifelong pole vaulter, runner, and lover of all things track and field, he excelled as an athlete at both the national and international levels well into his late sixties. Even while running his psychology practice, he continued to serve as a track and field coach at nearby Hunterdon Central High School. He was an early advocate and much sought-after coach for girls and women’s pole vaulting.

Jeff is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joy Lutz Tindall; their children, Colin Tindall (Robin Hibbert), also the son of Jeff’s first wife Carol McCoy, Sara Tindall-Woodman (Keith Woodman), and Kristen Lewis (Paul Ewing); and his grandchildren Zoë, Sophie, and Ben Ewing, Elizabeth and William Tindall, and Leo, Eleanor, and Scarlet Woodman. A memorial service will be held next summer.

To honor Jeff’s memory, the family will make a contribution to support young track and field athletes in need.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his name, addressing it to Sara Tindall-Woodman, 241 Pawtuxet Ave., Cranston, Rhode Island, 02905.
