Man detained in Georgia following Sunday shooting

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 37-year-old man was detained Tuesday in Georgia in connection with a Sunday shooting that left another man with non-life threatening injuries, deputies said.

U.S. Marshalls and law enforcement agents in Georgia tracked down the suspect – who the victim identified as Luis Alberto Rivera – Indian River County sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. Rivera was being held at the Glynn County Jail on an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office warrant, Flowers said.

Flowers said Rivera will be extradited to the Indian River County Jail, where he will be charged with attempted murder and armed robbery. Details on what items were stolen in the incident were not immediately available.

The name of the 29-year-old man – shot twice – was not released because of safety reasons. It was unclear if the man had been released from the hospital.

Flowers said Rivera and the injured man knew each other, but it was unclear how.

The shooting happened at 11:54 a.m. Sunday at a mobile home park in the 4600 block of 54th Drive, deputies said. Deputies found the wounded man not far from Jackie’s grocery store, Flowers said.

The man was shot in his right clavicle and right forearm, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Joe Kovaleski said. The man was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce with serious injuries, Kovaleski said.

Deputies spoke with witnesses at the scene and combed for evidence.

Deputies said they believed Rivera fled the area in a vehicle. Flowers said deputies went to Rivera’s last known address in the 1800 block of Flora Lane, Vero Beach, but he wasn’t there.

Deputies obtained a warrant and partnered with the U.S. Marshalls and law enforcement in Georgia to locate Rivera.

On social media, friends and family talked about the incident, saying the shooting may have been captured on video. Deputies, however, have not verified those claims.
