In Memory: May 8

Rev. Dr. Charles Whitford, 79, Vero Beach

Rev. Dr. Charles Whitford, 79, died 6 May 2020. He was born on 17 July 1940 to Geraldine (Campbell) and Allen Whitford. He was a miracle child, having been born premature and tiny. His twin brother did not survive their first day. Charlie was raised in Melrose and Stoneham, MA.

He holds four degrees from Boston University. He served the church for over 50 years as a pastor to United Methodist churches across New England; including Cherry Valley, St. Paul’s Lowell, West Chelmsford, Sudbury, Epworth Worcester, Hazardville, and First Rochester, NH.  He was a therapist at a number of Pastoral Care Centers as well.

He was a gifted and witty preacher and writer. He was a cherished minister and friend. Alongside him in all those years was Ann, his wife of 57 years. During his short illness, Ann heard from many parishioners of his care for them in times of difficulty and his joyful celebration with them in times of delight. Charlie and Ann were partners in ministry and in life. They raised two boys, to whom Charlie imparted a love of the outdoors, history, adventure, and a core belief in justice and doing what is right. It is perhaps fitting that one is a historian and the other a lawyer, he was immensely proud of the men and fathers they have become. He loved being a father, and adored being “Grampy.” He reveled in his grandchildren’s accomplishments whether they were on the lacrosse fields that all three play upon, or the classrooms where all three shine. He is survived by Ann; their sons and daughters-in-law, David and Laurel of Waco, TX, and Todd and Debra of Somers, CT; his beloved grandchildren, Abigail, Colin, and Spencer; his brother Allen and his wife Wendy of San Antonio, TX, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his older sister Ruth, and brothers Richard and Clifton Russell. Charlie lived, loved, and was loved. He rests now from his labors, and in glory shines.

At the request of the family services will be announced at a later date. Cards or notes may be sent to Ann via the funeral home website www.Strunkfuneralhome.com

Arrangements are entrusted to Strunk Funeral Home, 1623 North Central Avenue, Sebastian, Florida 32958.
