Deputies: Man falls in canal, drowns

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 35-year-old man died late Friday after he fell in a water-filled canal and drowned, deputies said.

The man’s name was not released. Deputies were working to notify the man’s next of kin, Indian River County sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said.

A witness called 911 about 11:30 p.m. Friday after seeing the man fall into the south county relief canal in the 300 block of 27th Avenue Southwest. The water-filled canal is 15 feet deep, Flowers said.

The man couldn’t swim, Flowers said. A sheriff’s helicopter and the fire rescue dive team searched the area.

The dive team recovered the man’s body, Flowers said. An autopsy was expected to be performed on Monday.

Detectives continue to investigate the drowning.
