Parks and Rec latest cyber attack victim

Just as the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office resumes most of its normal operations following a ransomware cyber attack, the City of Port St. Lucie’s Parks and Recreation Department was exposed to malware.

The city has not released much information about the incident and has not explained how the exposure occurred. The Port St. Lucie Police Department is investigating the incident.

The malware exposure occurred last Wednesday, Jan. 29, and only affected a minimal amount of information, according to City Manager Russ Blackburn.

“At this time, the City has no reason to believe that any personal or financial information was at risk,” Blackburn said in a prepared statement. He said the city doesn’t expect any negative impacts to services or residents.

Sarah Prohaska, a spokeswoman for the city, said all parks and rec “operations continued without hindrance and no interruption of public services was experienced.”

Blackburn said that the city would not release more information currently as the exposure is still under investigation.
