Skydiver hurt after making hard landing at Sebastian airport

SEBASTIAN — A 45-year-old skydiver has non-life threatening injuries after he made a hard landing at the Sebastian Municipal Airport, fire rescue crews said.

The incident happened about 2:20 p.m. Sunday at Skydive Sebastian, located on the airport property, 400 Airport Drive West, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Jamie Coleman said. When firefighters arrived, the man was awake and talking, Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said.

The man complained of severe back pain from the hard landing. The man was taken by ambulance to Health First – Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Coleman said.

Northwest winds in Sebastian were about 5 to 7 mph around the time of the incident, National Weather Service in Melbourne Meteorologist Kevin Rodriguez said. It was unclear if wind played a factor in the hard landing.

No further details were immediately available.
