INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — One person was in custody late Sunday after a shooting and multi-vehicle crash that left several people injured, deputies said.

A driver of a silver car was struck by the gunfire, deputies said. Deputies had one person in custody in connection with the shooting by 6:15 p.m., Indian River County sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said.

Deputies responded to reports of a shooting about 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2000 block of 9th Street Southwest. The incident happened after a person fired gunshots at a car – with five people inside – in the parking lot of a BP gas station, Flowers said.

Flowers said one person suffered a gunshot wound. The victim drove off at a high rate of speed before striking two other vehicles on 20th Avenue Southwest, injuring four others also in the victim’s car, Flowers said.

Flowers said two people – including the person who was shot – were taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce with serious injuries. Three others were taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Medical Center.

The suspect drove off from the area in a vehicle, but was located and detained soon after at a home, Flowers said.

Deputies continue to investigate the motive of the shooting. More details were expected to be released Monday.
