Tiptoe: Video captures shadowy figure checking doors in car burglary case

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Deputies are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man caught on camera tiptoeing away from a vehicle he was suspected of trying to break into.

Indian River County deputies said the unidentified man was pulling vehicle door handles about 5 a.m. Thursday in the Oak Ridge Subdivision, near 10th Street Southwest and Old Dixie Highway. The video shows the man appearing to touch the driver’s side door handle on a light colored car in a driveway.

A light from the residence turned on, which took the man by surprise, the video shows. The man then slowly tiptoed away from the area.

It was unclear how many vehicles the man approached and if any items were stolen.

Anyone who knows the man’s identity should contact sheriff’s public safety dispatch at 772-978-6240. Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-TIPS or tcwatch.org.

Callers can possibly be eligible for a reward of up to $3,000. Last month, a homeowner was shot while trying to stop a man who had broken into his vehicle in Vero Lake Estates, deputies said.

An update on the homeowner’s condition was not immediately available.
