The quiet serenity of Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary was broken by the sounds of a bagpipe playing, the ringing of ships bells and the trumpet of a bugle as veterans and members of the community gathered for the annual Veterans Day Ceremony last Monday morning, hosted by the Veterans Council of Indian River County.
The event honors all those who served in and were honorably discharged from all branches of the United States military.
As veterans paraded past flags wafting in the breeze, it was a reminder to everyone present of the sacrifices made and the debt owed to current and former men and women in uniform, with the realization that “freedom isn’t free.”
