Indian River County deputies arrested Cameron Alexander Macias, of the 500 block of 8th Place, Vero Beach, on a variety of charges including aggravated battery on an officer, criminal mischief and resisting arrest with violence. Macias, who appeared to have on Halloween makeup in his booking photo, was held Saturday at the Indian River County Jail without bond.

The face of the deputy – identified as Romeo Santana – was red, swollen and bleeding, reports show. Santana was taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital for treatment and released later the next day.

Deputies responded to a disturbance just before midnight Oct. 31 in the 3100 block of 73rd Place. A caller told deputies that her daughter and her friend Macias had fought in the driveway before leaving the area in an older model white truck with a broken out window, reports show.

Deputies spotted the 2003 GMC pickup turn west onto County Road 510 from U.S. 1. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.

Deputies ordered the two people inside – Amber Zeman and Macias – to step out of the truck. One deputy spoke with Zeman while the other deputy, Santana, spoke to Macias.

The other deputy said Zeman was intoxicated and yelling so loudly that the officer could barely get a word in. Deputies said Zeman kept interrupting and could not keep her train of thought.

Macias began to argue with Santana and became combative, deputies said. Santana wrestled Macias to the ground. The other deputy heard Santana yell that Macias was biting him, reports show.

Deputies were able to place restraints on Macias. Macias stiffened his body as deputies walked him to the patrol car.

Deputies punched Macias twice on his left side as he continued to jerk away from officers, reports show. Deputies tackled Macias to the ground again and waited for other units to assist.

Macias has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Dec. 6, court records show.
