UPDATE: Wabasso Causeway reopens after wreck

UPDATE: The Wabasso Causeway has reopened in both directions following a two-vehicle wreck that sent two people to the hospital. According to authorities, the crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. Friday when a Chevy pickup truck and a Subaru SUV collided.

Both people were airlifted to area hospitals. One was flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center, the other to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center.

The bridge is expected to be closed for the next few hours while crews work to clean up the scene and authorities conduct an investigation.

Eastbound drivers are encouraged to take US 1 south to Indian River Boulevard and cross either the Barber or 17th Street bridges. Expect heavy traffic along Indian River Boulevard due to the detour.

Westbound drivers should take A1A south to either Beachland Boulevard to cross the Barber Bridge or to 17th Street to take the Alma Lee Loy/17th Street Bridge.
