Camp Haven was awarded a $15,000 grant from the Business for a Better Indian River County Fund to retrofit existing space and the construction of a new building.
The improvements will enable the nonprofit to convert the current office space creating three additional housing units and relocate the administrative offices, meeting, training, counseling, and dining area to a new building on the south side of the property. The new building will replace the existing structure, which once held Gordon’s Diner – known for its food as much as having been the first building in Vero Beach with air conditioning.
The Business for a Better Indian River County Fund at Indian River Community Foundation was started by a group of like-minded businessmen wanting to pool their resources to provided financial support to local charities and philanthropies, according to Adam Logemann, Camp Haven finance project committee member. “We knew we could make a significant impact on the community directly, and we really wanted to be focused on giving to local organizations that we would be able to see the impact to the community as a whole.”
Logemann continued, “It’s a great fit because we’re a group of men, and Camp Haven is a charity that serves only men. This grant allows us to see an impact in the local community, and as a group of men, it allowed us to provide for men who are trying to become leaders and trying to become positive role models in society.”
“This support will help us carry out our mission to transform men’s lives,” said Chuck Bradley, Camp Haven executive director. “Camp Haven remains the only local facility that provides men with housing, counseling, and other support services in order to break the cycle of homelessness. With this grant, we can serve even more people in need.”
Camp Haven provides transitional housing and education to men committed to rising out of homelessness. Through a thoughtful intake procedure and strict adherence to guidelines, residents in the program receive educational opportunities, counseling, and encouragement as they move from homelessness to hopefulness, eventually becoming active, engaged, contributing members of our community.
