Work along the Wabasso Causeway, US 1 in Sebastian, and State Road A1A could cause some headaches for drivers in the coming days.
Starting Nov. 5, the lower level portion of the Wabasso Causeway will be down to one lane to allow crews to install new signage. Work is expected to last several days and be conducted between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day.
A flagger will maintain two-way traffic along the span. Drivers are encouraged to detour along US 1 to Indian River Boulevard and cross the Indian River Lagoon at the Barber Bridge.
In Sebastian, the outside northbound lane of US 1 will be closed at South Mirror Lake Drive to allow crews to install a turn lane. The closure will be from 9 a.m.. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Nov. 4 and wrapping up by Nov. 15.
Drivers are urged to use caution while driving north in the area and are reminded that construction zones are now no-cell-phone zones.
Work is continuing along State Road A1A as crews work on the nearly $5.4 million Hurricane Matthew Restoration Project. The work starts approximately 2.3 miles south of the Sebastian Inlet and runs northerly about one mile along State Road A1A. Completion is scheduled for the summer of 2020.
The project includes constructing a vinyl sheet pile wall system on the west side of SR A1A with reinforced concrete caps and placing rip rap with ditch lining to protect the shoreline against the storm surge and wave action from the Intracoastal Waterway during severe storm events; repairing the failed pavement areas within the southbound travel lane; installing a new southbound 8-foot concrete sidewalk; and installing thermoplastic striping and pavement markings.
Drivers are reminded that the speed limit through the work zone has been temporarily reduced from 50 mph to 40 mph.
Through November, the southbound lane of State Road A1A will be closed intermittently Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for land clearing and grubbing, sidewalk work and seawall construction. Two-way traffic will be maintained by temporary traffic signals.
The sidewalk on the west side of State Road A1A is closed through summer 2020 to facilitate installation of the vinyl sheet pile wall. Pedestrians should use the temporary path installed on the east side of State Road A1A, crossing at the temporary crosswalks.
