INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 59-year-old motorcyclist critically injured in a Monday crash where he slammed into the side of a sports utility vehicle that drove into his path, was identified Tuesday, officials said.
The man, identified as Robert Schleis, Vero Beach, had trauma to his head and legs, Vero Beach police spokesman Cpl. Darrell Rivers said. Schleis remained at the hospital in critical condition Tuesday, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said.
The SUV driver, 54-year-old Eileen Hill, Vero Beach, was cited for failure to yield the right of way. Rivers previously said the wreck appeared to be accidental and that alcohol and speed were not factors.
The collision, involving the Harley Davidson motorcycle and Toyota Land Cruiser, partially closed U.S. 1 in the immediate area for two hours.
Emergency responders were called to the crash about 5 p.m. Monday in the 1500 block of U.S. 1, across the street from a shopping plaza, Kofke said. Hill was traveling southbound on U.S. 1 when she made a left turn into the path of the motorcycle, Rivers said.
Schleis struck the right rear door of the Toyota, Rivers said. Schleis was flown by helicopter to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Kofke said.
No other injuries were reported. Police continue to investigate the crash.
