The Indian River School Board is on a fast-track to hire an interim superintendent by May 14 to replace Superintendent Mark Rendell, who will step down May 24.
During a special Wednesday meeting, the board agreed to begin accepting candidate applications from May 1 through midnight, May 8. Candidates should be emailed to Andrea Messina, executive director of the Florida School Board Association, which is coordinating the interim hiring.

The agreed upon plan is for the board to meet publicly from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., May 10 to discuss which candidates they want to interview. Candidate interviews, which will be open to the public, will be held between 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on May 13 and the board will discuss and vote on their top choice during a special meeting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the same day.
The board will vote to approve a contract with the interim during their regular business meeting on May 14.The board would like bring an interim on board for 6 to 12 months which will allow them to search for a permanent replacement for Rendell.
