INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The body of a missing 24-year-old woman from Highlands County was found in a lake behind the Vero Beach Outlets mall, several days after authorities reported she had been missing since last week.
Indian River County deputies found the body of Khadijah Anderson, of Avon Park, Saturday, days after the missing woman’s car was spotted nearby, Indian River County sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. Anderson was last seen March 25 in Avon Park in Highlands County, according to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office.
The medical examiners office will conduct an autopsy to determine what caused Anderson’s death, Flowers said. Flowers on Monday said initially there did not appear to be any signs of foul play.
Deputies found Anderson’s car Wednesday behind the mall, which is west of Interstate 95, Flowers said. The car doors were unlocked and the keys were still inside the ignition, Flowers said.
“It appears she was the only person in the vehicle,” Flowers said.
It was unclear why Anderson was in the county and where she was headed. Anyone with information on Anderson’s death should contact Highlands County sheriff’s Detective Vincent Forest at 863-402-7358.
