Person has critical injuries after shooting, officials say

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A person has critical injuries after being shot Wednesday evening, deputies and fire rescue crews said.

The shooting happened about 6 p.m. Wednesday in the 1000 block of 10th Place, south of Vero Beach and near Old Dixie Highway, Indian River County Sheriff’s spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. Deputies at the scene found an unidentified male with a gunshot wound; his age was not immediately available.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Christian Mathisen said the victim and suspect were both outside when the shooting happened, but could not give more details. It was unclear what prompted the shooting and if there were more suspects involved.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce with critical injuries, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said. Flowers said a vehicle was seen leaving the area.

No suspects were in custody by 8 p.m.

Further details on the vehicle and shooting were not immediately available. Detectives were at the scene talking to witnesses and gathering evidence.

Two sheriff’s crime scene vans and other patrol vehicles were still in the area about 8 p.m.
