Four people were killed and a fifth person injured when their vehicle collided and caught fire near Walton Rocks Beach on Hutchinson Island last week.
No identities had been released as of press time. The release of names remained pending notification of next of kin. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the agency is continuing its investigation of the fatal crash.
Information released reveals that a 2017 Chevy Cruze carrying four people was traveling at a high rate of speed south on A1A/S. Ocean Drive around 8 p.m. Friday, March 1.
The Cruze struck a 2014 Ford F-150 pickup truck that was attempting a right-hand turn.
The collision sparked a fire between the two vehicles, according to FHP. The truck went onto the west shoulder and overturned.
The truck’s driver, a 26-year-old woman, was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. She was wearing a seatbelt.
The Chevy Cruze rotated clockwise across the center of the road and stopped, facing east on the northbound lane. The report noted that it was not known if the driver was wearing a seatbelt. The other three passengers’ use of a seatbelt was marked “N/A” – not applicable.
The driver was male, according to FHP, and the three passengers were female. Ages were not released.
