FELLSMERE — Residents in Fellsmere might see smoke or ash from a 118-acre prescribed burn planned for Wednesday at a state park.
Officials with the St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park were authorized to conduct the burn, Fellsmere police said. The burn will be held from 11 a.m. to about 4 p.m. Wednesday in the northwestern part of the area, park manager Dylan Gavagni said.
The park stretches from southern Brevard County to northern Indian River County.
Authorities will burn mesic flatwoods, police said. Park officials received authorization from the Florida Forest Service – Orlando District to scorch the brush.
State officials usually conduct the burns to scorch off dead vegetation so new crops can grow. The burns also help to lessen the chance of an uncontrollable wildfire.
