INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Chilly temperatures along with expected showers led officials to authorize a cold weather shelter to open Thursday night, emergency service officials said.
The Source, a local Christian outreach ministry for the homeless and needy, opened the shelter at its facility, located at 1015 Commerce Avenue. Guests arrived and registered between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday, officials said.
No one was accepted after 10 p.m. A hot meal was served Thursday evening.
Thursday night will have a low temperature near 62 degrees, weather forecasters said. An 80 percent chance of rain – including showers and possible thunderstorms – was expected to sweep through Indian River County Thursday evening.
Friday and the rest of the weekend will have high temperatures in the 60’s and low temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s, weather meteorologists said. Southwest and northwest winds will be between 5 and 20 mph.
Those who want more information on the cold weather shelter can call Tony Zorbaugh, executive director at The Source, at 717-435-2312.
