VERO BEACH — Local schools were placed on a 20-minute lock down Friday as police searched for a suspect reported to be involved in an armed robbery nearby, officials said.
The non-school related incident occurred Friday afternoon at a location off campus, School District and law enforcement officials said. Authorities at 1:30 p.m. Friday placed Vero Beach High School, the Freshman Learning Center and the Alternative Center for Education on a code red lock down, School District spokeswoman Cristen Maddux said.
The Vero Beach Police Department is investigating an armed robbery which just occurred. As a result, the Freshman Learning Center, the Alternative Center for Education, and Vero Beach High School are on lockdown as a precaution. Nothing has occurred on any of the campuses.

Vero Beach Elementary was placed on a code yellow lock down. All lock downs were lifted about 1:50 p.m. and schools resumed normal operations, officials said.
The victim of the reported armed robbery declined to cooperate with police, spokesman Officer Brad Kmetz said. Further details on the suspect were not immediately available.
