Janice M. Gatling Lawrey, formerly Vero Beach

Janice M. Gatling Lawrey, formerly of Vero Beach, passed on to glory Oct. 1, 2018, in Moultrie, Ga.

Janice has resided in Moultrie for the last six years with her daughter Jackie, and son-in-law Perry. Prior to moving to Georgia, she resided in Vero Beach with her husband Joseph “Jack” Lawrey for 66 years.

Janice graduated with honors from Tarboro High School, Tarboro, N.C.

Upon graduation, she worked for the Tarboro Telephone Company. She attended church at Tarboro First Baptist.

Janice married Joseph H. Lawrey, on April 21, 1946, and immediately moved to Vero Beach where she remained for 66 years.
Janice was a long-time faithful member of First United Methodist Church where she served and was a member of Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class.

Survivors include her daughter, Jacqueline (husband, Perry) Mathews, of Moultrie, Ga.; granddaughters, Kimberly M. Demons (Joe), of Valdosta, and Leslie Hollenbeck (Grant), of Thomasville, Ga.; great-grandsons, Joshua C. Jones, of Valdosta, Ga., and Robert Alexander Hollenbeck, of Thomasville, Ga.; great-granddaughters, Hannah M. Jones, of Valdosta, Ga., Sarah E. Jones (fiancé Chase Marlett), of Statesboro, Ga., and Leah M. Jones of Valdosta, Ga.; sister, Mar Virginia Borchers (Evan), of Jonesboro, Ga.; brother, James Earl Gatling, of Tarboro, N.C.; and many loved nephews and nieces.

Janice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack; parents, Julian Irving Gatling, Sr. and Rosa Virginia Byrd Gatling; and brothers, David Gatling, Julian I. Gatling, Jr. and Wendell Gatling.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1750 20th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000 Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.

The family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Strunk Funeral Home in Vero Beach.

A service celebrating her life will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, at the First United Methodist Church in Vero Beach. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Ft. Pierce.

 

Sgt. Walter Adam Zawistowski, 77, Vero Beach

Sgt. Walter “Ski”Adam Zawistowski, USMC Retired, 77, passed away Oct. 1, 2018, at Indian River Medical Center. Sgt. Ski was born May 13, 1941 in Perth Amboy, N.J.

Sgt. Ski proudly served three tours of duty during the Vietnam conflict with the Recon Battalion of the 3rd Marine Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star with “V” for Valor, among many other commendations.

He was medically retired from the Marine Corps in October 1968 after a Vietnam war-related traumatic injury.

Walter lived in Florida since 1965. He worked in import and export of seafood until his retirement in 2001. He enjoyed boating fishing, and spending time with his grandson, Jaxon.

Sgt. Ski is survived by his four children, Walter Adam Zawistowski Jr. (wife, Lynn), of Key Biscayne, Fla., Matthew John Zawistowski (wife, Victoria), of Orlando, Melissa Dianne Zawistowski, of Rock Hill, S.C., and Aaron David Zawistowski (wife, Michelle), of Vero Beach; four grandchildren, Britney Zawistowski, of Lake Placid, Caitlynn Cramer, of Fort Drum, N.Y., Irina Zawistowski, of Orlando, and Jaxson Aaron Zawistowski, of Vero Beach; and one great-grandson, Landon Zawistowski, of Lake Placid.

Services will be held at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory, 1655 27th St., Vero Beach. A gathering of friends and family will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, with the memorial service and honors at Noon.
