Supporters of the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County got their motors running at a Shoe Guy Kickoff Party last Wednesday evening at Rosner Motorsports.

They were gathered to rev up fundraising efforts in advance of the fourth annual Wine Women and Shoes event, Nov. 8 at Sun Jet Aviation, and introduce this year’s all-important crop of Shoe Guys – the animal-loving men about town who support those fundraising efforts as they compete for the title of King of Sole.

“We have 20 Shoe Guys this year,” said Jennifer Downes, event co-chair with Crystal Tumolo, adding excitedly, “and we’re almost sold out of tickets to the event.”

“Some are returning Shoe Guys, some are sponsors and some were nominated by committee members, said Tumolo.

They’ll have tough competition from Chris Sullivan, the reigning King of Sole, who has vowed to defend his crown. “I’ve already started getting sponsors. I’m a UPS driver in Central Beach so I have a little advantage, knowing a lot of the businesses on the beach.”

Sullivan has already surpassed the $8,000 he raised last year, amassing $11,375 to date – “and counting,” he added, giving a winning smile.

Attendees enjoyed wine and hors d’oeuvres catered by Oak Harbor Club, as they wandered throughout Ron Rosner’s remarkable showroom, which features a stunning collection of exotic, luxury and vintage automobiles.

“On behalf of all the animals at HSVB, thank you so much for being here,” said Downes to the assemblage. “Each and every one of you is playing a significant role in making this event happen. I thank you, Crystal thanks you and all the animals thank you.”

Acknowledging all the Shoe Guys in attendance, Tumolo said, “the Shoe Guys are such an important part of the event. Last year the Shoe Guys were such a highlight of the night that for weeks on end all we could hear about was how awesome the Shoe Guys were. We are so excited to be taking it to the next level. We had to tell some guys they couldn’t be a Shoe Guy this year; that’s how cool you are.”

Organizers of Wine Women and Shoes promise a night of glitz and glamour, filled with delicious hors d’oeuvres from Vero Beach chefs, vintner wines, designer fashions, adorable and adoptable animals and, of course, the charming and talented Shoe Guys. The event’s presenting sponsor is Dr. Alan Durkin, Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery.

Proceeds will help enable the HSVBIRC to provide lost, abandoned or abused animals with medical aid, compassionate care and safe shelter until they can be adopted into new homes.

Tickets are $100 for general admission; $150 for VIP.  For more information, visit winewomenandshoes.com/verobeach.
