Davis, seeking new post, steps down as vice mayor

Melbourne Beach voters will decide who fills a vacant commission seat after Tom Davis resigned his position as vice mayor on Aug. 16.

Davis’ term was set to end in 2019. “Tom Davis resigned because he is planning on applying for a position with the town as the public works supervisor,” said Town Manager Robert Daniels, “if and when that position is approved via the budget process.”

Davis, a retired special agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, previously served as Mayor of Melbourne Beach, but resigned that post in 2013.

“I am going in another direction,” Davis said. “It was in my best interest to resign.”

The town had the option to appoint a replacement, but unanimously decided to hold a special election to fill the position held in conjunction with the general election on Nov. 6. There will be three seats open – two are for three-year terms and the other for a 12-month term.

A candidate for the Melbourne Beach Commission must be a registered voter, a resident of the town of Melbourne Beach for at least six months immediately prior to qualifying, and 18 years of age. Qualifying opened at noon Monday and closes at noon Friday, Aug. 31.

With regard to the vice mayor spot, Commissioner Wyatt Hoover was chosen in a 4-0 vote, during a special meeting on Aug. 22, to serve until an organizational meeting can be held upon certification of the November election results.
