Edna Mae Barrett, 87, Sebastian
Edna Mae Barrett, 87, the daughter of Henry and Jenny Lamoreux, was born in Belchertown, Mass., on Sept. 6, 1930, and passed away at her home in Sebastian on Aug. 22, 2018.
She was surrounded by her loving husband, Bruce Barrett, and three devoted daughters, Christine Oberly (Paul), of Sunderland, Mass., Pamela Derby, of Alachua, Fla., and Patrice Barrett, of Easton, Ct.
Edna graduated from Belchertown High School and married Bruce in Belchertown on Nov. 12, 1949, and would you believe they started first grade together!
Edna was employed at Amherst College in the Office of Administration for 21 years, retiring in 1989.
She was a devout Christian who attended Riverside Church in Sebastian.
After retirement, Edna and Bruce traveled extensively and worked as summer volunteers for 16 years at National and State parks. They had a full and adventurous life together. Bruce got his pilot’s license in 1968, and they flew to both local and distant venues in then United States, sometimes just for lunch! These trips also included a long distant flight to Dallas, Texas, and back in a small TriPacer airplane to visit Bruce’s brother. Edna served as the navigator.
In additional, they had a 27-foot sailboat named “BECAUSE” that they sailed out of Narraganset Bay for many summers. The Cape Cod Islands were some of their favorite sailing destinations.
Recalling their mountain climbing escapades in the West, Bruce has often said, “You can’t believe the places that this woman has followed me.”
Edna is survived by her three daughters, her devoted husband, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
“She was my wife, my lover, my best friend!”
A Memorial Service to celebrate Edna’s life will be held at Riverside Church, 11205 Roseland Road, Sebastian, on Sept. 9, at 2 p.m.
