VERO BEACH — Police are warning residents of a phone scam where callers are posing as Florida Power & Light Co. officials and threatening to shut off power to homes if residents do not make an immediate payment.
“This is a common scam throughout the state of Florida and in other states,” Spokeswoman Officer Megan DeWitt, with the Vero Beach Police Department, said Wednesday. “Anytime a business gives you a call and asks for a payment (method) that is not your normal way of payment, call the business (to verify). Follow your instinct.”
Within the past two days, police have received several reports from residents about the scam. The scammers are telling residents to go to the Dollar General at 660 Miracle Mile Plaza and then to call them back for further directions.
DeWitt said Vero residents who received the calls have not actually went to the store or called the number back.
Anyone who has questions regarding their FP&L account should call 1-800-226-3545. Those with questions about their Vero Electric account should call 772-978-5100.
Anyone who thinks they might have been a victim to the scam should report the incident to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
