Bonnie Jean Artigas, 75, Vero Beach

Bonnie Jean Artigas, 75, passed away on June 2, 2018, at her residence in Vero Beach. Bonnie was born in Clinton, Iowa, and lived in California, Pennsylvania, England, Spain, New York and Georgia, prior to settling in Vero Beach 10 years ago.

Bonnie received her Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and French from the University of Iowa where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha.

Bonnie was a retired Spanish and ESL teacher who taught at Leland High School in San Jose, Calif.

She was an amateur sommelier and excelled at computer solitaire. She was thrilled to know that Hillary will never be president.

Bonnie was a loving wife to her husband of 53 years, mother to her four children and Abuela to her 12 grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Ricardo Artigas, of Vero Beach; son, Richard Artigas (Sandra), of Ashburn, Va.; daughters, Alisa Artigas (Edward Dean), of Grant, Michelle Smith (Rodney), of Perry, Ga., and Dori Oxford (Glenn), of Wellington; and 12 grandchildren.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mildred Bethel Edlen; and brother, Gary Edlen.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, at Strunk Funeral Home in Sebastian.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 7, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Sebastian. Interment will follow at Sebastian Cemetery.

 

Timothy Collins, 57, Vero Beach

Timothy Collins, 57, passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 31, 2018, in Vero Beach. He was born in New York City, N.Y., on June 13, 1960.

He was a Certified Public Accountant at Hickey, Collins and Beach Chartered since 1982.

Timothy was an active member in the community through Vero Christian Church as he served in ministries. He was also a sponsor of local running events and a member of the Vero Beach Notre Dame Alumni Club.

His hobbies included being an avid marathon runner, a member of the 50 States Marathon Club and completing 47 states. Timothy also enjoyed the outdoors, playing golf, traveling, spending time with his family, having a great interest in genealogy and being a fan of sports, mainly of Notre Dame football after graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1982.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Lou Ann Collins, of Vero Beach; his daughter, Lauren (Christopher) Folds, of Vero Beach; his siblings, Kevin (Susan) Collins, of Alpharetta, Ga., Christopher (Holly) Collins, of Jackson Hole, Wyo., Kelly (Chris) Rogers, of Vero Beach; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

His parents Thomas and Elizabeth Collins preceded him in death.

Celebration of life will be held at Vero Christian Church on June 6 at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Tom Lockwood Memorial Fund at Vero Christian Church, 3250 9th Street SW, Vero Beach.

Daniel J. Deluca, Vero Beach

Daniel J. Deluca, beloved husband, brother and father, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018. He was born April 8, 1932.

Daniel served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.  He was an X-ray technician for 46 years and small business owner, operating Penny Hill Subs in Miracle Mile Vero Beach until 2011.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah; sister, Diane Livoti; and brother, Eugene Deluca; sons, Joseph and Jay Deluca; daughter, Tina Fehy; step-daughter, Carey Johnson; and eight grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his sister, Cynthia Deluca.

A Memorial Service will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 8, at Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home. Interment and Military Honors will follow at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery.

Michael Hurst, Vero Beach

Michael Hurst passed away peacefully on June 3, 2018, after a 3-year battle with cancer with family by his side. Michael was born in Trenton, Fla., to Jean “Gigi” Scott (Strickland) and J.T. Hurst.

He moved to Vero Beach in 1968 and graduated Vero Beach High School in 1973.

Mike was versatile in school; he was on the wrestling team, choir, theater and voted the most valuable defensive player in football his senior year.

Mike graduated Indian River Community College in 1978 with an Associates in Arts degree where he was the lead in Fiddler on the Roof, Carousel, The King and I, Godspell, Hello Dolly and participated in Music In The Air dinner theater.

He started his career with Strunk Funeral Home in 1979 and received his degree in Mortuary Science from Miami – Dade Community College in 1981. Michael was instrumental in helping families during their difficult times.

Six years ago, Mike started playing golf and was lucky enough to get two holes-in-one at Meadowood Golf Course in Ft. Pierce on Holes 7 and 11.

He excelled in everything he pursued. He loved to shop and enjoyed giving heartfelt gifts.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbi Hurst; children, Summer Simpson (Larry), Ben Hurst, Brook Lyons (Eddy), Corey Hurst, Kailee DeVuyst, Brendan DeVuyst; grandchildren, Faith Hurst, Aidan Chase, Kierian Chase, Shiloh Hurst, Isabella Shafer, Keaton Lyons and Kaia Lyons; siblings, Donnie Strickland (Anne), Lonnie Strickland (Stephanie), Darlene Strickland – Johnson, James Hurst (Jana), Keith Hurst (Nancy), Cheryl Spires-Primeau and Lisa Spires-Shaffer; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; J.T. Hurst (Doris) and Jean “Gigi” Strickland (L.C. “Strick”); brother, Ronnie Strickland; and sister, Gwendolyn DeVand.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday June 6 at Strunk Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will begin at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
