With 5K, Orchid Island clubs raise $11k for County Rec

ORCHID — With a history of giving to local charities, Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club held their 16th Annual 5K Walk/Run on April 4. Each year the proceeds from the event benefit a local charity, which is determined earlier in the year by the Club’s Fitness & Wellness Committee.

The charity selected this year was the Indian River County Recreation Department. Due to the generosity of 57 sponsorships from Orchid Island Club Members, and close to 75 participants, $11,000 was raised.

These funds will be used to help with the Recreation Department’s efforts to support recreational programs and facilities for County residents and visitors of all age groups.

“Our members at Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club are always looking for opportunities to give back to the local community. We are delighted this year to partner with the Indian River County Recreation Department. Proceeds from our 16th Annual 5K Walk/Run fundraiser will be contributed to its Scholarship Fund, which provides financial support so no child is turned down from participating in a recreational activity for monetary reasons,” shared Bruce Morrison, Orchid Island Board of Governors Tennis & Fitness Committee Chair.

“We wish to thank Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club for selecting the Indian River County Recreation Department as the recipient of the 5K Walk/Run. The Indian River County Recreation Department encourages all residents and visitors to be active and take advantage of the vast amenities here in Indian River County. On behalf of our youth and adult participants, we thank you,” expressed Mike Redstone, Recreational Director of the Indian River County Recreation Department.

Orchid Island’s annual 5K is open to Members, family and friends of the Club and also includes a one-mile fun run for children ages 13 and under. Following the race, an awards ceremony took place honoring the top male and female finishers of each age group.

This year’s top female and male overall finishers were a father-daughter duo. With a time of 19.23 this year’s overall winner and top female finisher was Lauren Hopper (OI Member Guest) and closely behind was her father, Cameron Hopper (OI Member Guest), who was the top male finisher with a time of 20.34.
