VERO BEACH — New works by Mark Kirby will be featured during May at the Center for Spiritual Care in Vero Beach. The exhibition, which opened Friday, May 4, will run through Thursday, May 31. The Center is located at 1550 24th St., two blocks north of Vero’s Main Library.
Kirby’s show, titled “Southern Exposure,” will focus on his abstracts and collages based on his Florida and other experiences in the American South.
Much of his work is rooted in his encounters with nature. Among his most memorable pictures is a series recalling Blue Cypress Lake, the largest lake on the Treasure Coast and the source of the St. John’s River. The lake’s name is taken from the blue appearance of its surrounding cypress trees as the rays of the morning sun reflect off the water.
Several paintings from this series are among the major works on view, according to Center Director Carol Ludwig.
“Mark’s exceptional color sensitivity and subtlety set his paintings apart,” she says.
Kirby has recently won awards for his work at Art By the Sea and the Backus Museum.
