FHP continues investigation in crash that killed bicyclist

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Highway troopers continue to investigate a fatal Tuesday crash that killed a bicyclist in the western part of the county, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

The crash was one of two fatal crashes Tuesday that caused heavy traffic on County Road 512. Indian River County deputies and Fellsmere police were at the scene Tuesday night.

The identity of the bicyclist, a man, will be released after family members are notified, troopers said.

Troopers said the unidentified bicyclist was crossing County Road 512 from the south to the north about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. A westbound 2003 Dodge Ram driven by Cody Lee Spaulding, 21, of Vero Beach, was traveling westbound on County Road 512 when the bicyclist rode into the westbound lane and into the path of the truck.

The truck struck and killed the bicyclist, troopers said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, said FHP spokesman Alvaro Feola.

Further details on this crash and the other fatal crash were not immediately available.
