Mae Ella Jones, 72, Vero Beach
Mae Ella Jones, 72, of Vero Beach, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018. She was born on Jan. 3, 1946, in Metter, Ga., to Hay Milton Johnson, Sr. and Corene Johnson.
Mae was the oldest of six children. She attended public school in Georgia.
Mae was employed as a chef at Historic Dodgertown, which was formerly known as Dodgertown. After 45-plus years of service, Mae retired in 2017.
Family was Mae’s passion and delight. She was the mother of five children and grandmother to 11, whom she adored.
Her generosity and kindness touched the hearts of everyone who met her as well as others who had the good fortune of knowing her.
Mae was preceded in death by her parents.
Left to cherish her legacy and memories are her children, Theresa (David) Pickett, of Vero Beach, Alfreida (John) Gordon, of Toano, Va., Willie (Nancy) Parker, of Santa Rosa, Fla., Annette (Lawrence) Williams, of Rowlett, Texas, and Lymas “Pep” (Julia) Parker, of Vero Beach; her siblings, Catherine (Kenneth) Gipson, of Vero Beach, Carolyn (Raymond) Brown, of Beaufort, S.C., Lila Ruth Johnson, of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Aileen Moody, of Garfield, Ga., and Milton (Tonya) Johnson, of Vero Beach; 11 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Mae was also a mother figure to Faye Brown of whom she loved very much and raised as her own. Steve Snure was also a special boss and sincere friend to Mae.
The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Larry Taylor and Reverend Charles Cypress officiating. Interment will follow at Crest Lawn Cemetery.
Mae will lie in state and visitation from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach.
Joseph F. Miles, 90, Vero Beach
Joseph F. Miles, 90, of Vero Beach, passed away Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach. Joe was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., and moved to Vero Beach 28 years ago after living in Apollo, Pa., and Williamsport, Pa.
He served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and the Korean Conflict. After working 40 years in the nuclear industry, Joe retired to Vero Beach where, for 10 years, he enjoyed working for the Los Angeles Dodgers organization at Dodgertown.
Joe was a private pilot, a member of the American Legion, and a dedicated follower of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap, skeet, and target shooting.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years Jane R. (Ott) Miles; children, Michael (Jennifer) Miles, of Cumming, Ga., Kathie (Gene) Dail, of Vero Beach, Dan Miles, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Alan Miles, of Butler, Pa.; grandchildren, Chris (Jessica) Miles, of Lenoir City, Tenn., Allison Miles, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Kimberly McCarroll, of Miami; and great-granddaughter, Kaila Canon, of Vero Beach.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Navy Seal Museum, 3300 N. Hwy A1A, Fort Pierce, FL 34949 (Please make checks payable to: National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum).
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., on Friday, Feb. 23, at St. Helen Catholic Church in Vero Beach followed by a reception at C. J. Cannon’s Airport Restaurant.
Carl Edward Olsen 83, Vero Beach
Carl Edward Olsen 83, of Vero Beach, passed away Feb. 18, 2018, with his daughters by his side. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y., on March 1, 1934, to the late, Haakon M. and Josephine P. Olsen.
Upon graduating high school he entered the U.S. Navy and proudly served during the Korean War. Once he returned, he had a career in law enforcement as a police sergeant with Montvale, N.J. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to Vero Beach where he worked at Orchid Island as a security supervisor for 27 years.
Carl enjoyed many things in life. He loved reading, traveling, watching football, going to the casino and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.
Carl was a very giving individual and gave to many organizations to help others.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen M. Falcon (Danny) and Eileen M. Jones (Brian); step-son, Robert Pohida (Roseann); grandchildren, Robert Pohida, Cara Pohida, Daniel Falcon and Brian Jones; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria; step-son, James Pohida; two brothers, Robert and Richard Olsen; and one sister, Elaine Fitzpatrick.
A visitation will take place Thursday, Feb. 22, from 10-11:30 a.m. at Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home, 1950 20th St. Vero Beach. A Funeral Mass will follow at Noon at St. Helen Catholic Church, 2000 20th St., Vero Beach.
The family suggests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
