INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Local schools recently named their District Teacher of the Year and District School-Related Employee of the Year, officials said.
Glendale Elementary School 2nd grade teacher Tess Borengasser was named District Teacher of the Year and Jillian Brothers, head custodian at Fellsmere Elementary School, was named District School-Related Employee of the Year.
Borengasser and Brothers were recognized along with their colleagues at the “Stars of the Year” Gala Monday at the Sebastian River High School Performing Arts Center. The gala, sponsored by MidFlorida Credit Union, had a “Hollywood” feel and included performances from Sebastian River High School Encore Choir, Storm Grove Middle School Jazz Band and Storm Grove Middle School Orchestra.
The road of achievements is not over for Borengasser and Brothers. The two will continue in the competition in hopes of becoming finalists for the State Teacher of the Year and State School-Related Employee of the Year, officials said.
The 2019 State Teacher of the Year finalists will be announced in May and the 2018 State School-Related Employee of the Year Finalists will be announced in March, officials said.
The State School-Related Employee of the Year will hold the title for the current school year while the State Teacher of the Year will hold the title for the following school year, said School District spokeswoman Cristen McMillan.
