INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — In a recent report by the Milken Institute, Sebastian and Vero Beach scored a high ranking for the 2017 Best Performing Small Cities across the nation.
The Sebastian-Vero Beach area was ranked number 14 out of nearly 200 other small metro cities, the report shows. The ranking increased by 21 points since 2016, when the area was ranked number 35.
Officials looked at factors such as growth in jobs, wages, salaries and technology over a five-year period. They also analyzed recent momentum across metro cities by looking at job growth for the past 12 months.
Six of the metro areas that had the largest improvements in rank for 2017 were in Florida, including the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville area, which was rated among the large cities, according to the report. These areas, which have many retirees, health care and medical hubs, are catching up on growth that had initially been hard to get coming out of the recession.
