William Laurence Caffrey, Jr., 92, Vero Beach

William Laurence Caffrey, Jr., 92, died Jan. 5, 2018, at the Hospice House in Vero Beach. Born in New York City to Bernice Grapes and William L. Caffrey, Sr., Bill lived a full and loving life with his family at the center.

His early years were spent in Darien, Conn. He attended Weston High School Class of 1943, and played football as one of the few freshman on the team. He attended Portsmouth Priory School, R.I., and was selected to be on the All Rhode Island Football 2nd Team. He graduated from Belmont Hill Academy, Mass., in 1943, enlisted in the Army, and was sent to Fort Devens, Mass., in September of 1943.

Bill completed boot camp with the 63rd Infantry at Camp Dorn, Miss., and was assigned to M Company, 3rd Battalion – Heavy Weapons Division of the 337th Regiment of the 85th Custer Division as a machine gunner.

He left Newport News, Va., and arrived in Naples, Italy, in March 1944. M Division moved into place along the Gustav line, alongside troops from Algeria, Morocco, France, Poland, Britain, New Zealand, Italy and India.

Bill fought in the Battle for Terracina and Formia near Anzio, cleared the town of Cassino after the battle at Monte Cassino and moved up the Appian Way liberating Rome on June 4, 1944. From there the Division moved along the Arno River, breaking through the Gothic Line and marching north through the Northern Apennines in bitter winter weather and into the Po Valley.

Bill returned stateside in March of 1945 and served as an MP in Lake Placid, N.Y., and Fort Andrews, Mass. He received the Bronze Star for “Meritorious Service in Ground Operations Against the Enemy in the European Theater of Operations during the Rome-Arno Campaign” and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal in 1946.

In November 1950, Bill married Alberta Galinauski, of Waltham, and they settled in Sudbury, Mass.They were happily married for 59 years and 11 months until her death in 2010 and together they raised seven children. Bill and Alberta loved to travel and enjoyed homes in the Berkshires, Gloucester, Mass., and at Grand Harbor and the Regency in Vero Beach. Bill was particularly fond of his cottage on Gurnet Point, Mass., where the family spent summers fishing, boating and swimming.

Bill began his career at Lever Brothers in Boston but with his great love of cars, was destined for the automobile business. He worked for Corcoran Motors, then as Sales Manager for Butler Motors and Framingham Ford until he ventured out on his own and bought Lee Ford in Lee, Mass., in 1973. His business grew and expanded to include Ford, Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge in Great Barrington until his retirement in 1991.

He loved to be of service to others and was proud to be a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, President of the Tri-Town Rotary in Lee, Mass., a Director of Berkshire Bank and a Director of the Massachusetts Auto Dealer Association.

After retiring his great joy was to serve as a volunteer for Hospice House doing respite care for 14 years. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Survivors include children, Deborah Novack, of Vero Beach, Michael Caffrey, of Uxbridge, Mass., Patricia Caffrey (Nittler), of Williston, Vt., Sara Smith, of Vero Beach, Jonathan Caffrey of Duxbury, Mass., Jennifer Himes, of San Diego, Calif., and Carolyn Caffrey of Nashua, N.H., 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

His wife, Alberta, and his sister, Sally Tappen, of Little Compton, R.I., preceded him in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Monday Jan. 15, in Holy Family Church, 601 Tremont St, Duxbury, Mass. Visitation will be held in the Church prior to Mass from 10-11 a.m.

Interment will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass., 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 16.

 

 

Norma Rohrs, 97, Vero Beach

Norma “Nicky” (nee Nickerson) Taft Rohrs, 97, of Vero Beach, departed this world on Sunday Jan. 7, 2018. Nicky was born in Somerville, Mass., Nov. 9, 1926, lived and attended schools in Lexington, Mass., and summered on Bustins Island, Maine.

She was a proud graduate of the University of New Hampshire and a member of Theta Upsilon sorority.  It was at UNH where she met her husband, Nathaniel C. Taft.  After their marriage they lived in New Hampshire; Long Island, N.Y.; and for many years in Lexington, Mass.  They summered in Megansett, Mass., where they were members of the Megansett Yacht Club and actively raced Cape Cod Knockabouts.

While in Lexington, she was a member of Hancock Congregational Church, a Cub Scout den mother, and a member of the Junior League of Boston.  In 1967, they moved to Marblehead, Mass., were members of the Boston Yacht Club and cruised on their ketch, Stella Mare, from Maine to Cape Cod.

In 1975, they made their home in Vero Beach. She spent many years as a “pink lady” volunteering at the hospital’s thrift shop.

Her first husband, Nathaniel C. Taft, died in 1978. In 1984, she married Robert (Bob) Rohrs, who died in 1998.

She was a member of the Vero Beach Yacht Club where she could frequently be seen playing bridge with her many friends.

She loved her family, swimming, boating, birds, wildlife, flowers, playing cards (cribbage, bridge, hearts) with friends, big band music, musical comedies, seascapes, good manners, the five o’clock pause for conversation, and everything in its assigned place.

Nicky was predeceased by her parents, Donald and Carolyn Nickerson; brother, Donald “Bud” Nickerson; sister, Carolyn Kitchin; first husband, Nathaniel Taft; and second husband, Robert Rohrs.

She is survived by sons, Dr. David (Anne) Taft of Harpswell, Maine, Robert Taft, of North Falmouth, Mass., Donald Taft, of Mount Horeb, Wisc.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; “daughters-by-choice” Robin Rohrs, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Kim (Bud) Bentley, of Ft. Lauderdale; Cheryl (Winston) Yost, of Boise, Idaho, and Susan (Gary) Miller, of Sheridan, Wyo.

A gathering will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home, 1950 20th St., Vero Beach.

Nicky’s ashes will be buried in the Taft family plot in Oxford, Mass., at a time yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, memorials could be made to VNA, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
