In Memoriam: Jan. 5

Georgiana Catherine Mary Sehl Gallucci, 73, Vero Beach

Born in upstate New York, Georgiana “Georgie” Catherine Mary Sehl Gallucci lived a full and faith-based life. Georgie was 73, and passed in Vero Beach on Jan. 2, 2018.  Georgie spent her summers in upstate New York and winters in Florida. Her final days were spent resting peacefully in a Florida hospice care facility.

Georgiana was married to Louis Anthony Gallucci, Jr,. dating back to July 24, 1965.  After 50-plus years of marriage, they also were together during high school leading up to their marriage.

Georgie served for decades as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and became a certified safety instructor. Georgie also enjoyed her part-time work, especially during the holidays, at a local pie and bakery establishment.

Georgie was an active member of several Catholic Church communities in upstate NY and Florida. Georgie enjoyed the time with her family, friends and especially her husband, Lou.

Georgie could be found on several golf courses – any women’s day with her friends or with Lou – she was the putter of the team!

Georgie is survived by her husband Lou; her three children, Laura Fasano (husband, Patrick), Vincent Gallucci (significant other, Amy Sturm), and Paul Gallucci (wife, Abigail Gallucci); five grandchildren, Madeline Fasano, Gianna Gallucci, Rachel Gallucci, Marina Fasano and Joseph Gallucci; three siblings – William Sehl (wife, Madeline Sehl), Barbara Cavalieri (deceased husband, Joseph) and Margaret Schlueter (husband, Roger Schlueter).

The family will have a private visitation prior to the funeral.  All are welcome to Saint Ambrose Church in Latham, New York on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m. There will not be a reception to follow.

Walter T. Hesse, 56, Sebastian

Walter T. Hesse, 56, of Sebastian, passed away Jan. 1, 2018. Born Aug. 30, 1961, in Boonton, N.J., he was son of the late Walter and Bertha (nee Shipps) Hesse.

Walter and his parents moved from New Jersey to Lake Worth, Fla., where he attended and graduated from Lake Worth High School in 1980.

After high school, Walter worked in the air conditioning business.  The last 27 years, he was employed by Smyth Air Conditioning of Lake Worth.  When he and his wife relocated to Sebastian 13 years ago, Walter opened and managed a new branch of Smyth Air serving Indian River and St. Lucie County.

While living in Lake Worth, Walter enjoyed playing racquetball and he competed in many local and national tournaments.  The national tournaments gave him, his wife and friends the opportunity to travel around the United States to several other states.

After moving to Sebastian, Walter became an avid NASCAR fan.  He and his fellow NASCAR buddies attended races in and outside of Florida.

Walter’s greatest achievement was his desire and willingness to help others.  He shared his time, talent and treasure whenever, wherever he could.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Elisa Hesse. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
A visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 6, at Seawinds Funeral Home, 735 S. Fleming St., Sebastian, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. followed by a Funeral Service beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Entombment will follow at Fountainhead Memorial Park, 7303 Babcock St. SE, Palm Bay.
In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be made at the service.  The funds will be used for a bench, in Walter’s memory, that will be placed adjacent to his crypt at Fountainhead Memorial Park.  The bench will allow anyone who visits to sit and recall memories of Walter or their loved one while enjoying the splendor of the park.

Ronald Edward Ohl, 81, Vero Beach

Ronald Edward Ohl, 81, of Vero Beach, died suddenly and peacefully surrounded by his family and his devoted service dog, Charlie, on Dec. 27, 2017.  Born in Warren, Ohio, on May 30, 1936, to Howard Edward Ohl and Ella Mae VanAuker Ohl, he was raised in Mineral Ridge and later in Warren, and graduated with honors from Warren G. Harding High School.

Armed with a scholarship, he continued his education at Amherst College where he graduated with honors in 1958 and received the Edward Poole Travelling Fellowship, which he used to study opera in Rome for a year.

While in Italy, he coordinated the Young Artists Concert Series for the American Embassy and he sang in a cafe in Florence.  A tenor with an accomplished voice, he turned down the opportunity to sing with the Met as he knew he had stronger academic talents and he returned to the US to begin his graduate education.

Fluent in Italian and with reading and research abilities in Medieval Latin and Greek, he received his Master’s Degree in Medieval History from Columbia University in 1961, his thesis on the Roman fortresses in Southern Italy.

He was chosen by the Rockefeller Brothers Foundation as one of 30 people nationwide to pursue study in theology with an emphasis on values and ethics and he took this opportunity and attended Union Theological Seminary, NYC, where he graduated with honors in 1964.  His advisors, Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Tillich, assured a strong footing in ethics and values, which he then took into his long higher education career.

Ordained by the United Church of Christ (UCC) in Chicago in 1965, he joined Elmhurst College as an Assistant Dean and then began his doctoral residency at University of Pennsylvania.  He earned a PhD in Renaissance History with his dissertation focused on the International Character of the University of Padua 1450-1505. His dissertation was recognized for excellence and awarded a prize.

His academic career included appointments as Dean of Students at Colorado College, Assistant to the President and VP at Fairleigh Dickinson University and capped off as President of Salem College/Salem-Teikyo University/Salem International University, 1983-2001.

Always active in community and civic organizations, he served on the United Way Board and the Boards of the Salvation Army, Rotary Club, Boys and Girls Club, Chamber of Commerce, Girl Scouts, Independent Association and Fund of West Virginia, and BBT, Clarksburg and Martinsburg, W. Va.

He received the Distinguished West Virginian Award in 2000.  Proud to be a Son of the American Revolution (SAR), he enjoyed memberships in the Vero Beach Yacht Club and was formally a member of the Lewes Yacht Club and the University Club, NYC.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joan Eschenbach Ohl; his devoted service dog, Charlie; and his cat companion, Bocelli; and the thousands of young lives he touched thru his higher education and community legacy.

A Memorial Service/Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Community Church of Vero Beach, 1901 23rd Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

The family requests no flowers.  Instead, memorial gifts may be made to the Music Program of the Community Church of Vero Beach.
